Citizen Engagement and Empowerment
During the last decades, self-organised groups and civil society organisations have positioned themselves as relevant stakeholders in urban transformations. Empowered and informed communities have noticed the relevance of collective action and self-organisation to overcome State and market failures. Their main goal is to achieve better living conditions by claiming land uses rights, access to adequate and affordable housing, or by advocating inclusive neighbourhoods. Besides their engagement in activism, self-organised communities are capable to increase their participation in decision-making processes, moving forward from a passive role to active involvement in co-creating urban solutions.
